Let's go to the movies!

Let's go see a show!

Who doesn't like to go out to check out what is at the theaters. We see all of these great trailers and it looks like a great escape from reality for a few hours.

I had the opportunity to catch an early screening of Captain Phillips. Keep in mind...I am not a movie guru, or someone who is looking to meet the Siskel to my Ebert, but I do enjoy movies. Now that movies are like $13+ dollars, I'm definitely more critical of what I see.

Getting the chance to go out to the movies is great, but for free...even better!

To start with, I've been to advance screenings before. I know the drill, turn your phone off,, don't have it out, enjoy the show. Not this time, it was a new beast. I'm sure it had something to do with the high profile of the movie, but they took the, 'Don't Pirate This Movie' super serious. They took our phones, and any other tech device you had on you, searched my bag & 2 gentlemen wanded me to make sure I wasn't smuggling anything in my cleavage (or other lady bits). A guy came in, gave us the '$250,000 fine and 3 years in federal prison' talk and the show began.

*possible spoilers?*

Now into the good stuff! I went into this movie, with basic knowledge. It is Tom Hanks, a true story, the guy lives. I didn't realize that I was already familiar with the director, he is the guy who did the middle two Bourne films. First thing I noticed was, shakey camera shakes a lot! I guess this is the directors style, but ugh! Another thing I noticed was that I did not actually see a straight on shot of someone's face for about 15 minutes, and that was a running thing throughout the whole movie. I mean, I wanted to see was a clear view of some of those seal team hotties and that didn't happen. A lot of the shots, were waist up only, mostly just face framing shots. I understand it is his style, it is for effect, meh. All in all, the movie was good, it will get awards.

On my personal scale...This is definitely a movie I would have paid for. Now it isn't something that I, myself, was going to run out and go see on opening weekend. But if I was at the theater and picked this, I wouldn't be mad to give them my money.

I know that doesn't really sound that impressive but here are some other ways I rate movies:
  • How did that director get paid
  • That sucked
  • It wasn't horrible
  • It would have been better if I didn't pay for it
  • I would feel better if I had have gone to the matinee
  • It was good
  • OMG why did I wait so long to see this?!
  • I'll go with someone else to see this again
  • I am going to see this again and buy it as soon as it comes out!

Usually my default for things that don't impress me that much is...It wasn't horrible. That goes for food, life experiences, movies and/or books.

If you're looking for something good, and not getting dizzy from floating in space...go see it. It is good, and if you like a good bio pic, some action, or just Tom Hanks, you will enjoy it.

Now...Fingers crossed I get to go to more of these things. And next time I will remember to leave my crap in the car ^_~
